TOP PRODUCERS OF 2006
1. Timbaland/ Nate Danjahandz: What didn’t Timbaland produce that wasn’t a smash as a single this year? Justin Timberlake (“SexyBack” & “My Love”) to Nelly Fuertado (“Promiscuous Girl” & “Way It Right”) and then Omarion (“Ice Box”)????? Timbo was all over the radio in 2006… Not to mention his contributions to Young Jeezy, Rich Boy, Snoop Dogg, Diddy , Chingy, The Game… The list goes on. (We list Nate Danjahandz because he has been a major contributor and has co-produced a lot of material in 2006 along side Timbaland, so we give credit where credit is do.
2. Polow Da Don: Ok… So he’s mainly an R&B & Pop dude, but Polow did his thing in 2006. Look at the list Fergie (“London Bridge”), Ciara (“Promise”), Kelis (“Blind Fold Me” ft. Nas), Pussycat Dolls (“Buttonz” ft. Snoop Dogg). Oh and let’s not forget he’s doing some Hip Hop too and scored third and fourth quarter singles for Ludacris (“Runaway Love” ft. Mary J. Blige) and Rich Boy (“Throw Some D’s”). Look for Polow to be all over the place in 2007.
3. DJ Toomp: He just produced T.I.’s biggest single to date (“What You Know”) and also got his chops with the lead single to Young Jeezy’s new album with “I Luv It.” 2006 saw DJ Toomp get work on some of the biggest albums of the year as well. He had tracks on Rick Ross’s Port Of Miami (“White House”) and Ludacris’s Release Therapy (“Mouths To Feed”)…. Definitely a winner for 2006.
4. The Runners: These guys came out of no where with a unique approach to production that followed the lead of Swizz Beatz when he signatured a repeated vocal sample on the hook, but these dudes took it a bit further and fucked with the voices track making it into a sort of chopped & screwed melody and hence the creation of Rick Ross’s “Hustlin’.” With that one smash under the belt they couldn’t be stopped… The Runners went on to produce a majority of Rick Ross’s debut Port Of Miami and scored the single off of Trick Daddy’s new album with “Bet That.” They also blessed Smitty (“Lil Haiti”), Ludacris (“Slap”), Jim Jones (“Reppin’ Time”), Fat Joe (“No Drama”) and so much more in 2006. Not bad for two new guys.
5. Will.I.Am: Well he’s no stranger to mainstream success and finally became a go to guy for artists across the board when he broke out on the Busta Rhymes’ single “I Love My Bitch.” I was a superb year of production for Will.I.Am all together. He scored three placements including two singles off of Nas’s Hip Hop Is Dead album (“Hip Hop Is Dead” & “Can’t Forget About You”)… Oh yeah he also put in work with Justin Timberlake, Fergie, The Game, Ciara and Common… We can go on, but I think you can see why he’s made the list.
6. Swizz Beatz: Ya’ll thought Swizzy was sleeping in 2006? Well niggas… Ya’ll were the ones sleepin’!. He single handedly held DMX down with multiple tracks and the lead single (“We In Here”) from his album Year Of The Dog… Again. Held Beyonce down for real with “Ring The Alarm,” “Get Me Bodied,” and “Upgrade U” ft. Jay-Z from her multi-platinum album B-Day. Helped Busta Rhymes take it back to NYC with “Touch It” and also contributed to Jay-Z’s comeback (“Dig A Hole”), The Game (“Scream On Em”) and 2pac (“Untouchable” ft. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony). Swizz can’t be stopped.
7. JR Rotem: This white boy was on it in 2006. Scored a pop smash with Rihanna’s “S.O.S” single then flipped it on us when he helped move more records for Rick Ross with his follow up single “Push It.” Not to mention his work on The Game’s Doctor’s Advocate (“Doctor’s Advocate” ft. Busta Rhymes & “California Vacation” ft. Snoop Dogg & Xzibit). Oh yeah he also got it in with Obie Trice and served up four tracks for Second Rounds On Me. Not a bad year for Mr. Rotem.
8. Scott Storch: Ok… A relatively quiet year for Hip Hop favor it “go to Jew” on the boards, but Scotty had some bangers. He helped rejuvenate Fat Joes career with “Make It Rain.” He dropped two bangers on Nas for Hip Hop is dead (“Carry On Tradition” & “Play On Playa” ft. Snoop Dogg). Oh yeah and not to mention all the underground work he’s been doing… From Yo Gotti to Nox and countless others, Scott Storch was in the mix of a lot of circles in 2006 as a go to guy when it comes to beats.
9. Nitti: All we got to say is… IT’S GOIN” DOWN!!!
10. Just Blaze & J Dilla (TIE): Very quiet for Just Blaze with only one single for Jay-Z (“Show Me What You Got”). The strength of that late 2006 single gave Just a lot of clout in ’06… No to mention, he also had lot of placement on huge records. The Game’s Doctor’s Advocate (“Why You Hate The Game” ft. Nas & Marsha of Floetry & “Remedy”) and T.I.’s King (“King Back” & “I’m Talking To You”). J Dilla even in passing made us nod our heads with tracks with Ghostface (“Beauty Jackson” & “Whip You With A Strap”), Busta Rhymes (“You Can’t Hold A Torch”) & The Roots (“Can’t Stop This”). J Dilla had released two critically acclaimed albums shortly after his death in 2006 (Donuts & The Shining). R.I.P. Dilla.
