1. Lil Wayne: What didn’t Lil Wayne do this year? Well he didn’t drop The Carter III, but we forgive him for that. What ellse he did was keep everyone checking for him consistently. Every week you’d see a new Lil Wayne mixtape or interview. You’d hear him on the radio, at a concert and in some cases you could find him chillin’ in your hood poppin’ off. He was everywhere and most of all accessible to his fan (Which the fans like). He’s entertaining, intriguing and most of all talented. In 2007 no other artist could have kept it buzzing like Wayne did without the help of a major release.
2. Jay-Z: As a less than stellar head of Def Jam Records; Jay felt it necessary to become an artist again in 2006. With that one decision he changed the game again for all of us in the process of two albums. Being a little rusty and out of tune with his fans made his late 2006 album Kingdom Come fall short of expectations, but in 2007 he made us all forget that and with a masterpiece called American Gangster. Along with the release of American Gangster Jay stepped up his other ventures outside of music by opening more 40/40 sports bars, investing in a hotel franchise and of course building up the buzz for the Nets to move to Brooklyn. Oh yeah… Jay also stepped down as head of Def Jam before people could really catch on to his lack of label management skills. What a great year for the Jigga man!
3. 50 Cent: 50 ran everything that Jay-Z didn’t control in 2007. Here’s the run down… Finished off Cam’Ron and embraced his closest “friends” Jim Jones & Juelz Santana. He single handedly made it cool to do viral video campaigns through YouTube and other video outlets to promote unreleased music videos and footage. He showed total lack of respect for Diddy, Kanye, Styles P & even Jay-Z and they all seem to be cool with him at the end of the day (Diddy & Jay even hopped on a song with him). 50 helped Kanye West move close to 950,000 records the first week all because people didn't like him (50 Cent). Oh yeah... 50 Cent was also the highest selling Hip Hop act worldwide in 2007… Now that’s what we call the power of the half dollar.
4. Kanye West: As much bitching as he has done over the years, it’s been hard for us as a staff to like Kanye’s “character” enough to give him the type of respect his music demands. Then again, e’re critics like everyone else who jocks him and we just don’t believe the hype. Overall Kanye killed 2007 with a surprise radio hits in “Stronger” and “The Goodlife” while overtaking Hip Hop’s powerhouse 50 Cent in first week sales with his Graduation album. Kanye also showed he loves his fans by going on with his world tour even after the untimely passing of his beloved mother Donda West. All this takes courage, patients and a strong will that Kanye has proven he has.
5. Soulja Boy: This little nigga is 17… That’s all our staff could say when we picked him to be in the top 5 artists for 2007. He was the highest selling debut R&B/Hip Hop act of 2007 with 117,000 units scanned the first week and he sold 1.9 million ringtones. Did we mention he got his deal by mainly promoting his songs on MySpace? Soulja Boy represents the new way of getting on in the music business and shows that success is not necessarily measured by how talented you are, but by how hard you’re willing to utilize what talents you do have.
