2Pac Tops Most Overrated Artists List In Blender Magazine

Submitted by Str8hiphop.com on September 4, 2008 - 2:10pm.

Dead rapper Tupac "2Pac" Shakur, the hip-hop icon who sold more records after he was murdered than during his brief career, is the most overrated person in music, according to music magazine Blender.

Shakur tops a tongue-in-cheek list that also includes "places, trends and other junk in rock," Blender said in its upcoming October issue, due on newsstands next week.

Other overrated finalists included the Grammys at No. 7, encores at No. 12, Pink Floyd at No. 14 and "the music you loved as a teenager" at No. 23.

Shakur, a "gangsta" rapper who showed his sensitive side in movies, was killed during an unsolved drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996. More than a dozen albums have been released in the ensuing years, and his image is almost as ubiquitous as that of Che Guevara or Bob Marley.

But while Shakur was a decent rapper with "insane rock-star charisma," according to Blender, he also "larded records with self-mythologizing, mediocre filler."

It's not the first time the pages of Blender have been used to bring down Shakur a few notches. In its June issue, rapper Lil Wayne listed him among his top five rappers, but then admitted: "I can't front: I was never into Pac."

As for the Grammys, the music industry's top awards, Blender said sitting through the ceremony was "like watching paint dry on Celine Dion's forehead."

And encores were notable chiefly for allowing bands to go backstage and do drugs while fans wonder if they should beat the rush to the parking lot, Blender said.

Veteran British rock band Pink Floyd, meanwhile, were responsible for "unbearable LSD slapstick" and "self-important bombast." And Blender warned that teenagers' brains "can inflate a great band to Christ-size proportions" and turn a bad song into the most meaningful.

2pac is very overrated "all eyez on me" is just a huge mess and the whole makeveli album was the dumbest idea I have ever heard of.Rakim, and nas are actually much better and more talented than 2pac.Not saying 2pac wasnt good saying that he is overrated cause he died but he has one classic album and thats "me against the world" thats it.No one ever talks about the fact that his music was never that good they just talk about passon and influence and all that shit that never translates into his average music. You cannot say that that early shit he was doing was classic matter fact it was barley even good and once he finally got it together and started making good music he turned around and signed to death row witch is the g-unit of the 90s and the guy who he influenced most is Ja Rule witch isnt a positive thing.Biggie was superior and even pac knew it and was threatened by him,nas was better,jay-z was better, ice cube was better and thats just 90s rappers that are better than him. What was diffrent about him from 50 Cent? What can you honestly say is the diffrence they both have 1 classic album (power of the doller for 50 Cent and me against the world for 2pac) and they both have such a slim vocabulary that a 2 year old could grasp them.Another thing is they say Tupac was real but he wasnt a real thug he was actually very artistic and shock g said that he was very shy did you know 2pac was into ballet and the theater before he was into 40 onces and gang banging 50 Cent was more of a "real gangster" than pac ever was fitty did have a record before he made a record and pac didnt(not saying have a record is good just breaking down the myth pac was gangster). He didnt even have great skills he never used punch lines, metaphors, and similies or any of that and saying he didnt need them is idiotic cause he did just like all these other rappers people complain about who are not that much diffrent than 2pac.People talk about 50 Cent for refering to getting shot to much while 2pac did it way more he could never shut up about it.I dont know how many people have really heard a 2pac album front to back cause trust me every album but me against the world was average and even bellow average like all eyez on me was.He was good but he put more filler in his albums than any other rapper in history ever did especially on his last two albums.

Face it dumbasses love pac like old people love matlock.

What people mean by

What people mean by overrated is hyped. 2Pac might be one of if not the most hyped up artist in recent history. Take a huge recording artist’s life violently at the height of his fame, and that’s to be expected to some extent. However, if there was little talent there, there would be nothing to hype. Many criticize 2Pac for not using the lyrical tools that are commonly used by most MCs. People could easliy assume he didn’t use similies and metaphors due to a lack of ability or understanding of them. However, this is clearly not the case. When he used those tools alone, he was just another pretty good rapper. He didn’t use the techniques that most MCs use, because he didn’t need them. He simplified his message just short of the point of saturation to make his ideas accessable to the common man, but there was a genius in his simplicity. Put any dope MC in the booth with an emotional track and they might drop some lyrical genius. They may impress you. Usually, however, by the time a lyrically impressive verse is carefully constructed, the emotion is lost. People would get chills and shed tears while listening to 2Pac’s music while he was alive! Sure, his violent death exasperates that but it shouldn’t discount his talent. 2Pac was so quick at writing that the emotion was still fresh on his voice when he recorded. He knew this and he exploited it to the fullest at a time when exploiting emotion was not popular at all. He might have been quantity over quality, which led to some filler material. However, this is the same formula that he used to create some of the most important songs in hip hop history. He spoke up on behalf of impoverished women, not just on one obligatory song, when most rappers exclusively called all women ho’s and bitches. He’s so authentic, that you can believe everything he says. His contradictions only make him seem more human and relatable. A decent rapper can make you bob your head. A good rapper can make you think. A GREAT rapper can make you feel. 2Pac is that rapper. There’s nothing overrated about that!

Sorry folks but 2Pac really is overrated...see its hard for some people to see it because he has classic songs but what they're saying is that Pac slid a lot of "mediocre filler" in his albums...come on now...yes Pac did have songs like Brenda's Got A Baby, So Many Tears, Temptations, Dear Mama, California Love, etc

But...there were other songs on his albums

2Pacalypse now was a decent album, but it had a lot of bullshit on it...nobody really talks about Strickly 4 My Niggaz...Me Against The World was like his most well rounded CD...All Eyez On Me is probably one of the most overrated albums ever...and Makaveli had strong songs on there but also had wack ones...

I don't count anything else really cause he wasn't alive when they dropped but come on

How many times did Pac recycle the same lines over and over

My adversaries that I had to bury being one

See people look at style over substance and Pac had crazy charisma which made up for a lot of the difficiencies with his music...yeah he had some songs...a lot of songs that pushed the envelope but he also had a lot of songs that people skipped or forgot about

Not saying he's the most overrated ARTIST ever...but he definitely didn't leave us with a catalog to eliminate him from the conversation

Ok if you logic is that an artist is overrated because there are some songs on the album that are filler (or just not your personal preference), then name me one artist or band that has even 3 albums in a row that are back to front hottness? I mean come on the way you put it with this filler argument basically classes all musicians as overrated...there are always songs on even your fav artists albums that you don't like.

Oh and Makavelli was an incredible album, give me a break hahahaha

Saying Tupac is overrated is

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on September 11, 2008 - 11:05pm.

Saying Tupac is overrated is like saying Jesus was just a carpenter. Now i'm not saying pac is JC but hear me out. Put aside that he had deep, prophetic lyrics that illustrated the situation for many in america's inner cities in the early 90s, Tupac's delivery or flow if you will was pure passion. Listen to "white mans world" and tell me that he did not spit his heart and soul.

Now obviously blender magazine is a bunch of top 40 wankers who know Caliifornia love and maybe maybe gangsta party. What they don't know is that tupac used his celebrity power to be a very vocal activist as well. Though not widely reported tupac did much for the community and very often spoke and lectured at political gatherings, not in beverly hills, but in his communities, inner city america.

Blender, get a life, do your research and never, and i mean never put pac on an overrated list. you die and sell that many records, that isn't overrated that is fact. I won't even get into you about pink floyd...

Pac is a legend and isnt even near the most overrated rapper.Snoop Dogg is the 2nd most overrated rapper in hip-hop history no doubt.Snoop is a top 25 mc to me but he is exactly 25 on that list to me and I have heard people call him a top 3 mc.Lil wayne is the most overrated hands down cause people call him a icon and say he is the best ever now and that is total bullshit wayne isnt even near my top 50 list for best rappers he has 0 good albums. He has some little maiterial that I can stand. So blender lil wayne at #1 then Kirk Cobain at 2.

2pac is one of the best

Submitted by Stevie London (not verified) on September 7, 2008 - 2:39am.

2pac is one of the best rappers ever to do it. He did different types of songs like dear mama, keep ya head up before any other rapper had done that type of song, he cohe could write deep storys like brenda had a baby, club tunes, hard tunes like pain, he had it all, he could change his flow. He is the only rapper ever to have three classic albums one after another in Me Against the world, All Eyez on Me and Makaveli the don killamati 7 day theory. not even jay-z or nas had three classic albums one after another and certainly not lil wayne, jeezy or Kanye. overated i think not. Lil Wayne is overated.
