How to Convert Italian Shoe Sizes to US Without Guessing

Convert Italian shoe sizes to US with brand-specific men’s and women’s charts, half-size examples, and checks for sneaker labels and fit.

To convert an Italian shoe size to US, use the shoe brand’s chart and the correct men’s or women’s column. For example, women’s IT 38 converts to US 8 at Gucci and Versace. Men’s IT/EU 42 converts to US 9 at Officine Creative—but US 8.5 at Gucci. There is no single subtraction rule that works for every Italian brand. (Gucci size guide, Versace women’s guide, Officine Creative size guide)

Women’s Italian-to-US shoe size chart

These conversions match the official Gucci and Versace women’s charts. Use them for those brands, not as a universal chart for every sneaker sold in Italy.

Italian size (IT) US women’s: Gucci and Versace
35 5
36 6
37 7
38 8
39 9
40 10
41 11
42 12

Both charts also list half sizes: IT 37.5 = US women’s 7.5, and IT 40.5 = US women’s 10.5. Across their listed ranges, subtracting 30 reproduces the women’s conversions—but only use that shortcut after confirming the brand’s chart. (Gucci, Versace)

Men’s Italian-to-US shoe size chart

The difference between these two official charts shows why a generic converter can give the wrong answer.

Italian/European size (IT/EU) US men’s: Officine Creative US men’s: Gucci
39 6 5.5
40 7 6.5
41 8 7.5
42 9 8.5
43 10 9.5
44 11 10.5
45 12 11.5
46 13 12.5

Half sizes differ too: IT/EU 42.5 = US men’s 9.5 at Officine Creative, versus US men’s 9 at Gucci. Subtracting 33 works across Officine Creative’s listed men’s range; it does not reproduce Gucci’s conversions. (Officine Creative, Gucci)

Watch Gucci’s “SIZE” column. Its men’s guide lists a Gucci size 8 alongside IT/EU 42, UK/AU 8 and US 8.5. A listing that says only “Gucci size 8” needs clarification—it is not automatically US 8. (Gucci)

Is Italian sizing the same as EU sizing?

The labels can share the same numbers: Versace’s women’s chart has identical IT and EU columns, while Gucci’s men’s chart and Officine Creative’s charts use a combined IT/EU column. That does not make the US conversion identical across brands. (Versace, Gucci, Officine Creative)

For sneakers, follow the manufacturer rather than the country of purchase. Nike EU 42 is US men’s 8.5 or US women’s 10 in its respective charts—not the women’s US 12 shown for IT 42 above. (Nike men’s chart, Nike women’s chart)

If 42 is the size you’re checking, our Italian size 42 guide compares more brands, including adidas and Diadora.

Before ordering a pair

  • Identify the size system. For a resale listing, ask for a clear photo of the shoe’s size marking and box label rather than relying only on the seller’s converted size.
  • Confirm the category. Men’s, women’s and youth US sizes are different references. For a unisex pair, check which chart the product page uses.
  • Read the model’s fit notes. Versace specifically directs shoppers to each product’s Size & Fit section for footbed shape and sizing information. A chart conversion is not a recommendation to size up or down. (Versace)
  • Use measured foot length when the chart supports it. Nike recommends measuring both feet and using the longer measurement. It also warns that CM/JP on the box or label is different from measured foot length. (Nike measurement instructions)

Once you have the converted size, check the actual pair for toe room, forefoot pressure and heel hold. Our sneaker fit guide separates those checks from the number on the label.
